Sait Faik’in unutulmaz itirafının benim dünyamdaki tam karşılığı şu duyguda saklı: 'Resim yapmazsam deli olacaktım.'

We are face to face with an artist who courageously brings to light the emotions humans tend to avoid in her portraits. Inviting viewers to confront their own inner worlds directly through the striking expressions in her paintings, Gözde Yıldırım defines painting not merely as a technique, but as a mode of survival—a way to rescue fragments from her mind. Ahead of her solo exhibition at Art Traffic Gallery in Istanbul this October and her busy art fair schedule, we spoke with her about the pangs of creation, those familiar confrontations on the canvas, and her upcoming projects.

In your works, we witness a deeply personal and profound journey through the layers of the mind, memory, and form. If we consider your practice not merely as a technique, but as a mode of existence; how do you define yourself by integrating with art?

"For me, painting is far more than simply transferring color and form onto a surface; it is a struggle to bring to the surface the fragments I manage to rescue from the depths of my mind. Moments and emotions that stand chaotic in my mind come back to life on the canvas, gaining a ground to hold onto. The exact equivalent of Sait Faik’s unforgettable confession in my world lies in this very feeling: 'If I didn’t paint, I would go mad.' Had I not given concrete form to what was in my mind, I would have been crushed under the weight of those images. For this reason, before being an aesthetic pursuit, painting is my way of rescuing what is in my memory, making peace with my mind, and in a sense, a mode of survival."

There is an unsettling feeling in your portraits that cannot be passed by, and that almost captivates the viewer. I don’t mean this in a negative sense; on the contrary, it is an unsettling yet equally fascinating confrontation that calls out to the viewer, “Look at me, see me!” Is this effect a conscious and deliberate direction in your creative process?

"The fact that you ask this question shows that the emotion I aim to convey has found resonance with the viewer. Of course, the impact of each artwork varies from person to person; however, the expressions in those portraits are ultimately reflections of familiar feelings that all of us experience, witness, or deeply sense within ourselves. During the creative process, the portraits themselves tell me what kind of expression they wish to embody. At times, I capture fleeting expressions that I carry inside me, and at other times, ones that feel entirely alien to me at first glance. Throughout the process, I remain in constant dialogue with the figure. The moment I apply the final touch is a genuine encounter for me: I either say, 'Oh, I know you!' or we are meeting for the very first time."

Thank you so much for this short yet impactful journey into the depths of the mind and the powerful confrontations on the canvas. Lastly, what kind of projects, exhibitions, and pursuits await us in the coming period? Could you tell us a bit about your future plans?

"Thank you for this enjoyable conversation. A very intense and exciting schedule awaits me over the coming year. Right now, I am pouring all my energy in the studio into preparing for my solo exhibition, which will take place at Art Traffic Gallery in Istanbul this October. In addition, I will be participating in art fair programs both domestically and internationally in the future. In short, I will be in a dynamic period where I share my portraits with broader audiences."
